EXPLANATION OF MOST COMMONLY FOUND PROBLEMS IN BRAKE DRUMS:
Brake systems should be
checked at systematic and programmed intervals These checks will result in
Diminished
fuel consumption
Decreased risk of breakdowns on the road
Decreased repair costs
Cracked
Brake Drums : Problem: Extensive heating and cooling may
cause cracks on blocks of lining surface. Reason: Recurrence of cracking
problems may be the result of insufficient brake and brake drum systems or maladjustments
for certain applications. If no error is detected during the inpection control
process of the break system and brake drums, the problem may be due to driver
fault or negligence. Explanation: When the brake system is controlled,
wear of brake drums must be compared with producer firm's values. The diameter
of a brake drum must be suitable to the radius of brake lining. If these are not
a proper fit, uneven tearring in the brake lining will occur resulting in a shortened
life span. At the same time the brake lining will overheat causing cracks on brake
drums. Thin
Heat Cracks : Problem: Thin, hairline cracks appear on the
brake drum's working surface. Reason: This problem occurs when brakedrums
are continually heating and cooling. Explanation: These thin cracks
don't affect the performance of braking but must be constanly kept under control.
If cracks begin to deepen, the brake drum must be changed. Oval
Brake Drums : Problem: Uneven wear on the drums surface
Reason: A deviation from the radius occurs at different points of the working
surface of drums causing more wear on one drum surface than on the other.
Explanation: This kind of brake drum must be turned straightly on a lathe
to correct to the point not exceeding maximum drum diameter. If this diameter
exceeds the maximum diameter, then the drum must be changed. Oiled
Brake Drums : Problem: Colorless spots are detected or the
brake drum surface or brake system. Reason: There is a leakage of grease
or oil in the brake system. Wrong oiling of accentric or wrong lubricating of
a brake system may cause unwanted oiling. Explanation: The leakage
point must be found, repaired, and the brake system completely cleaned. If after
this proccess the brake drum is still oily, then the brake drums must be changed. Deep
Lined Brake Drums : Problem: Deep lines appear on the braking surface
of brake drums and extensive wear. Reason: Extensive wear. Explanation:
If these lines are little, repairs can be made by turning the lined area on the
lathe. Also, if the lines little and if the diameter of brake lining is in tolerance,
then only the lining may need to be changed. In order to decide, the quantity
of wearing material in brake system must be controlled. If necessary both lining
and drum must be changed. Shining
Brake Drum :
Problem: Braking surface on the drums are shining like a mirror. Explanation:
In this case it must be repaired with 80-100 degree sand every. If this problem
continues, then wear of the drum must be controlled. If the brake drum surface
is like a glass, it must be asked to producer of the vehicle for alternative brake
drums. Spotted
Brake Drums Because of Heat : Problem: Blistered darkened
dots appear on the brake surface. Reason: These are result of unwanted,
irregular wear. When pressed to a pedal for braking, it senses as pedal was moving
under the foot and voice may come during braking. Explanation: To recover
this case, we have to turn on lathe to clean such surfaces or stoning may be sufficient.
If we can't manage in this way then the brake durm must change. For adjusting
maximum braking effect, irregular wearing, case of brake drums must be controlled
and if necessary must be changed. Suggstions
to Extend the Usage Life of Brake Drums and Linings : When mounting
drum or disc on hub, if excessive force is applied, there may be deformation on
counter parts. The reason for this must be found and corrected. The bearing
of the wheel must be mounted correctly in order to avoid the excessive power force
on the brake drums and discs during the braking. In certain intervals the
brake drums and lining must be checked. Unadjustment of distance betwen brake
drums and discs may cause on over heating of brake drums and dicsc and result
in higher fuel consumption. This must be fixed. When brake drums heated the
parking brakes must not be used. It is recommended to wait for cooling otherwise
the brake drums may be cracked. When
the Brake drum must be Changed : The safe usage of brake drums
depends on different factors. The conditions that determine the life of brake
drums are listed below: Brake drums msut be changed when the following provisions/conditions
occur: 1- Maximum degree of diameter is reached 2- Utmost heating occurs
3- Cracked 4- Strong dots appear inside 5- Bolt holes wear or broaden
6- Deep lines appear on the surface of linig 7- Extensive heat caısed when
braking 8- Curved and distored 9- To meet the smiked Braking balance and
effect brake drums must be changed as a couple Guarantee
